Community and public housing news
Message from the Minister
I am pleased to announce the Department of Communities Garden Awards are on again. The department's Garden Awards are conducted each year to:
- recognise housing tenants who establish and maintain beautiful gardens, and
- acknowledge the important role tenants play in improving their local community.
The Garden Awards continue to have a focus on water-wise gardens. The awards will be judged on how the gardens reflect and promote water-wise principles.
This includes water-wise techniques such as using composting materials and mulch, and the smart selection of plants that require little water and fertiliser.
Entrants in parts of Queensland that are not affected by drought and water restrictions will be judged on the appropriate and effective use of water for their local conditions.
This year we also have a new category for edible gardens.
The edible garden category is for gardens with mostly fruits, vegetables, or herbs. Tenants who have edible gardens are supporting the Queensland Government's Towards Q2 initiative to encourage a healthy lifestyle.
The Garden Awards demonstrate a successful partnership with regional Tenant Groups and Housing Services offices. This year, the tenants of community and local government-managed housing are once again invited to participate in the awards.
The 2008 awards attracted more than 1,200 entrants from across the State. I encourage all eligible tenants to participate this year, to help make these the best awards yet.
Remember to watch every drop and use your creativity!
