A Place to Call Home

A Place to Call Home is a new national approach to help families move beyond homelessness by addressing its causes whilst providing safe, appropriate and stable housing.

The initiative gives families who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness, a social housing rental property for the duration of their need and up to 12 months’ coordinated help across the spectrum of social support services.

This extra support – for example with parenting, relationship or financial management difficulties – aims to help families move beyond crisis and fix the problems that have contributed to them cycling in and out of homelessness.

Support is provided through existing programs of the Department of Communities. The department’s Housing and Homelessness Services staff also work with families to build their capacity to sustain housing over the long–term.

Where possible, families are housed near their children’s schools and community support services, to give them the best chance to sustain a stable family and work life as part of a community.

A Place to Call Home in Queensland is a $71.5 million initiative, with equal funding contributions from the Australian and Queensland Governments. The initiative will provide 143 new dwellings in Queensland over five years until 30 June 2013.
