Design principles
Planting
The use of trees, ground covers and other plants should be an integral and thoughtful part of the overall design, not an afterthought.
Trees and plants:
- contribute to the microclimate of the site and the locality
- improve the appearance of front gardens
- provide definition and amenity to private spaces
- shade or soften group car parking areas, and
- aid legibility within group schemes.
Wherever practical, significant existing trees on the site should be retained and protected.
Arguments for careful planting include:
- It is a major source of resident amenity.
- It promotes community acceptance of the new development.
- It provides a habitat for wildlife.
- It provides opportunity for recreation for housebound residents.
