Design principles

Legibility

How to get to a dwelling from the street or to a dwelling within a group from shared pathways should be obvious and unambiguous. It should not be easy or likely that a visitor or resident will get confused or lost.

The front doors of houses facing streets should therefore be visible from the street or clearly signalled by the design of the dwelling. Similarly, the way into a group scheme should be obvious, sight lines should be clear along paths, and the front doors of other dwellings should be visible or clearly signalled from shared pathways by both the built form and its detailing.
