Design principles
Inside/outside connection
There should be both a direct visual and a direct physical access relationship between the dwellings living/dining area and the private external space (the back yard or balcony).

Hence, an indirect or remote relationship

...is not acceptable
Reasons:
- A direct inside/outside connection is a central requirement of livability in most Queensland climates. In good weather, it significantly expands the living space easily available.
- It ensures a reasonable aspect from the living areas to other areas under the control of the resident.
- It can facilitate cross-ventilation.
- It increases the sense of space in tightly planned housing.
