Design principles
Conclusion
The principles expressed in here aim to create better housing. They outline some broad issues of design, dealing with:
- how dwellings should relate to the public realm
- how dwellings should relate to each other, and
- how dwellings should relate to their outside environment.
Good design is about creative and practical problem solving.
There will be times when one design principle must be thoughtfully traded against another. In all such decisions about priority, the department should be involved.
These design principles contain some of the issues to be considered in the design of good housing. Therefore, they should be read in conjunction with the project brief, other departmental documents and the requirements of other authorities.
