Tips for improving access at home
Is your safety and independence being compromised by some of the most common barriers found in the home? Many of these barriers can be overcome.
The Queensland Department of Communities (Housing and Homelessness Services) has produced an award winning Over 100 ways to improve access at home publication. This publication provides information on products and services and a range of ideas to improve access in and around the home.
You will find access solutions that are portable, easy to install or remove and reasonably inexpensive to purchase (compared to major structural modifications). There are ideas for the entire home - from the bathroom to the outdoor areas.
For example, in the kitchen the hotplate controls may be too small to grasp. A possible solution would be to use a contour turner on top of the hotplate controls to assist in turning them.
Information and contact details are also provided in this publication on organisations that can provide modifications, equipment and free advice and referrals.
