Housing Policy and Strategy
Housing Policy and Strategy's goal is to ensure that the Department of Housing's role in the Queensland housing system contributes appropriately to the Queensland Government's priorities and whole-of-Government outcomes, thereby leading to better outcomes for the Queensland community and strengthened Government support for the work of this department.
This role is achieved through the provision of strategic advice - based on informed research, consultation and evaluation - to the Government, the Minister and the Board of Management, on social and economic issues of significance to housing.
Housing Policy and Strategy focuses on three broad areas of work to achieve this goal:
- building a clearer understanding of the contribution made by housing assistance interventions to the Government's strategic priorities through research and evaluation;
- translating this understanding into a clear and coordinated strategic policy and legislative framework; and
- contributing to the corporate planning and budget cycle, as well as output policy and planning processes, to help build improved alignment within the organisation to this changing policy context.
Housing Policy and Strategy provides this support through:
- managing strategic evaluations;
- overseeing the development and implementation of whole-of-department research and evaluation strategies;
- strategic direction setting, and the development of a Strategic Policy Framework to inform future investment and budget decisions;
- actively shaping the national research agenda, and supporting the development of housing research in Queensland;
- negotiating with central Queensland Government agencies - Department of the Premier and Cabinet, and Queensland Treasury - regarding the future funding directions of the Department of Housing;
- interdepartmental coordination of strategic research, evaluation and policy development;
- supporting the corporate planning and budget cycle;
- renewing the legislative base for the department;
- funding of peak community sector organisations, and supporting relationship building between the department and these peak bodies;
- building departmental capacity development of policy, research and evaluation skills;
- coordinating Department of Housing disability policy development; and
- developing legislation to enable the department to achieve its objectives.
